The role: The Associate Pastor of Discipleship and Mission will work closely with the Senior Pastor and is responsible for designing and implementing a continuum of discipleship through:  1) spiritual formation, 2) fellowship, and 3) outreach opportunities for all covenant partners to grow in their discipleship and love of Jesus Christ and one another.

Bonhomme Presbyterian Church, the oldest Presbyterian church west of the Mississippi River, was founded on October 4, 1816, under the pastoral guidance of Reverend Salmon Giddings. Bonhomme is grounded in history and tradition, and has always been a church built on a biblical foundation. Today, that foundation of being a God centered and worshiping church remains, and you will find a multi-generational church that has created a welcoming place for individuals and families of all ages, backgrounds and experiences to find a place called home.

The current Senior Pastor, Phil Hargrove, is leading Bonhomme Church into a new era of not only having a strong Biblical teaching foundation but having a renewed passion to be a church family that loves one another, loves the community, and shows the heart of Christ in all they do. The Associate Pastor of Discipleship and Mission will:
  • Partner with the Senior Pastor to continually cast vision and live out the mission of the church
  • Partner with the Senior Pastor, staff, lay leaders and Session; design and implement a discipleship strategy, which are:
    • Consistent with the vision and mission of the church
    • Focused on the spiritual growth of covenant partners (from birth to the grave) and attracting new covenant partners
  • Develop the measures and numerical goals to show the internal participation in church attendance, Bible study, Student Ministry, and Children’s Ministry
  • Develop plans and goals to increase the outreach to the local geographic area to make new disciples, and new covenant partners
Key Responsibilities:
  • Leadership:
    • Serve as an active member of the church leadership team
    • Preach and teach when asked by the Senior Pastor
    • Participate in general pastoral duties as needed (weddings, funerals, pastoral counseling, etc.)
    • Assist in the recruitment and training of spiritual formation and fellowship group leaders
    • In collaboration with the directors of Adult, Student, and Children’s Ministries to fine tune existing small group practices to ensure small groups flourish
    • Create interconnection between all ministry areas
  • Discipleship:
    • Create and implement a clear Spiritual Formation pathway
    • Working with the Directors of Adult, Student, and Children’s Ministries, lead the process of choosing and implementing an integrated curriculum and discipleship process for all age and demographic groups
    • Provide oversight to the Adult Ministry in the areas of policy, Scriptural adherence, and resource management
    • Provide oversight to the Student Ministry in the areas of policy, Scriptural adherence, and resource management
    • Provide oversight to the Children’s Ministry in the areas of policy, Scriptural adherence, and resource management
  • Mission:
    • Provide oversight to the Missions Ministry in the areas of policy, Scriptural adherence, and resource management
    • Organize and lead Bonhomme Mission trips, as appropriate
    • Create a process of intentional fellowship events both within the church as well as in the community
    • Create and implement avenues to reach out to the community as a welcoming and supportive presence, providing resources and outreach opportunities
    • Engage in the church’s relationship-building with its supported mission partners, including occasional first hand experiences
What you bring:

A bachelor’s degree is required for this position. A master’s degree or further theological education or a seminary degree would be ideal for this role.

Seeking a candidate with a minimum of five years’ experience working in a church ministry leadership position.
