2011-04-21_14-19-04_525Meet First Baptist Church Winter Garden:

On August 26, 1888, Rev. J. A. Richardson, who at the time was also the Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Oakland, called a group of baptized believers together for the purpose of establishing a new Baptist church in Ocoee, Florida. That meeting, along with their vision and hard work, would forever change the spiritual landscape of the area and make an impact for the Kingdom of God down through the next 130 years.

The young church made its first home in Ocoee, just a few miles from where it is presently located. By 1889, the members were meeting wherever they could find a space, but had begun to feel the need to put down roots and build their own house of worship. God seemed to have ordained that it should not be in Ocoee, however, because several attempts to buy property there were unsuccessful. For example, in 1893 they were offered a piece of property for $50, and Brother Kelley even offered to donate the lumber for the new building, but the church members couldn’t raise that much money. So in 1896 when Brother J. L. Dillard offered the church an attractive lot and $250 if they would relocate to Winter Garden, the church felt that God was in the offer and accepted. Not long afterwards, on the fourth Sunday of August 1896, a newly-erected building was dedicated and the First Baptist Church of Ocoee became the First Baptist Winter Garden.

As the work of the church progressed, growth continued. In 1921, Dr. C. W. Duke, the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Tampa, Florida, was invited by the church to conduct a revival. Many souls were saved during those meetings and the entire church membership was revived. God had been let into the hearts and lives of His people and He was “giving the increase.” At that time, the church became aware of the need for a larger building and the fruitful efforts of the revival meeting seemed to stir them into action.

This building, built in 1896 on the southwest corner of Plant and Woodland Streets, served as the church’s first sanctuary. It was remodeled in 1909, and later moved onto the present church property. Eventually, it was moved to the Lake Johns area.

The following resolution was adopted on May 28, 1921: “Resolved that we proceed at once to start a campaign to raise funds for the purpose of erecting a new, adequate house of worship.”
