The Spiritual Development and Group Life Director is responsible to lead and grow the adult disciple-making and life groups departments of Grace Fellowship Church.  The role includes development and execution of an annual growth plan based on the ministry philosophy of GFC, group coach and leader identification and recruitment, small group curriculum development, and ongoing leadership and coaching of group leaders. The overall win is to build a movement of multiplying disciples in the context of groups.  

The Spiritual Development and Group Life Director will: 

Oversight of Disciple-Making Groups

  • Champion small and mid-size ministry environments as the essential context for making disciples.

  • Develop and maintain an annual plan that ensures continuous improvement and growth of small group involvement.

  • Implement small group coaches, leaders, and small group participant recruitment methods and systems, ensuring a healthy small groups growth rate over time.

  • Plan and execute small group connection events as a means of bridging the gap between large group environments and small group environments.

  • Foster a strong, active, growth and recruiting focused pipeline of small group coaches, leaders, group members, and individuals interested in becoming part of the church’s Small Groups Ministry.

  • Plan and execute regular small group leader training and recognition events, ensuring the existence of a healthy body of small group coaches and leaders upon which to grow a strong Small Groups Ministry.

  • Drive and coordinate series/corporate small group pushes as part of the church’s weekend service planning and design processes.

  • Integrate small group curriculum with GFC weekend teaching focus and select supplemental group curriculum/tools as needed.

  • Oversee staff and ensure missional alignment across all Adult Ministry areas  (Men’s, Women’s, Life Groups, Young Adults).

  • Lead their team in the development and growth of strong Small Group Ministries fostering disciple-making, community, care, and spiritual growth.

  • Partner with our BEYOND team to integrate small groups into local outreach opportunities, thus encouraging disciple-making through serving in their community.

  • Work with the communications team to create promotional materials and methods that ensure everyone at the church is aware of the small group’s ministry area, its purpose and importance, and how to get connected.

GFC Pastoral Staff

  • Develop the annual departmental budget and manage spending to budget.

  • Function as a member of the church’s pastoral staff performing baptism services, weddings, funerals, etc. as part of a rotation schedule.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What you bring: 

Education & Experience

The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a minimum of a BA or BS degree.  A master’s degree in church leadership or small groups is preferred.   A seminary  or graduate  degree is a plus.    

  • Have attended and integrated best practices from  small groups training/equipping conferences.   

  • Possess four or more years of full-time  paid staff  experience leading/participating in a small groups/adult disciple-making ministry (experience in a church over 2,000 in attendance is strongly preferred) .

  • Have two or more years of experience leading small groups or adult ministries in a multi-site ministry context.

  • Have a successful track record of leading  a small groups/adult ministry through  a large team of volunteers.   Must be a leader-developer who  seeks to do  ministry and lead through others.

  • Be able to provide  a  written philosophy of spiritual development and/or small group ministry (three pages minimum). 

  • Have the capacity to build/lead a team that would  directly and indirectly  train/equip hundreds of  small group leaders and coaches across our church.    

  • Possess exceptional organizational and leadership multiplication capabilities.

Grace Fellowship Church is located in the suburban community of Timonium, in Baltimore County, Maryland. With a population of about 10,000, it is an area where cultural diversity is growing. It is also home to some of the best schools in the county with most test scores above the state average. Timonium is also the home of the Maryland State Fairgrounds, which holds a variety of events throughout the year including the much-anticipated annual State Fair.

This area of Baltimore County offers several nearby recreational spots including the Northern Central Railroad Trail, which is a 20-mile-long former railroad corridor that runs along the Gunpowder River and Loch Raven Reservoir which offers numerous hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, and fishing. There are both beach and mountain areas within a three-hour drive which makes Maryland the ideal location to experience a full range of world class activities throughout each season of the year.

There are several nearby growing communities including Hunt Valley to the north, home of the world-famous McCormick Spice Headquarters and booming Towson to the south with Towson University, and quickly expanding areas with shopping, dining, and entertainment. Baltimore is just 15 miles south of Timonium and boasts diverse historical landmarks and entertainment attractions including two major sports teams (Orioles and Ravens), Preakness Stakes, National Aquarium, Fort McHenry, the world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital and University, Chesapeake Bay and Inner Harbor, and more.

Grace Fellowship Church is located in the tranquil, middle-upper class suburb of Timonium, Maryland, home to approximately 35,000 residents. Just 20 minutes north of Baltimore, we are also close to a large metropolitan mission field. More than 650,000 people live within a 15-minute driving radius of the church and the number climbs to over one million within a 30-minute radius.
