Meet Hulen Street Church:

Our Beginning: Reaching New People

Hulen Street Church began in 1959 as Sunset Heights Baptist Church, a church plant of Connell Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas. The people of Connell Baptist realized there was a growing community in Fort Worth and saw the potential for more people to know the love of God.

Through a series of tent meetings, Sunset Heights Baptist Church became a reality, with people becoming disciples of Jesus and becoming family with one another. The church eventually changed their name to Hulen Street Baptist Church to reflect their immediate location.

Our Turning Point: Relocation

As the years passed, the church began to see the need to move to the rapidly-growing Candleridge area of southwest Fort Worth. Pastor Josef Solc led the challenge to sell their property near Hulen Street and Interstate 30, and buy the Hulen Street Tennis Club, located just south of Hulen Street and Altamesa Boulevard.

Many within the church were skeptical or unwilling to change locations, so much so that 90% of the church members found another church to be a part of. The 10% that remained resolved to see Hulen Street Baptist Church reach people in southwest Fort Worth for the gospel.

Within the first two years of moving to their new location, Hulen Street Baptist Church began to see amazing growth, ministering to many within the community. They opened their tennis courts and swimming pool to the public and began making in-roads to the nearby Candleridge community for the gospel.

Growing Up: Rebuilding And Expansion

After one of the church's buildings burned down, the people of Hulen Street saw a major opportunity to respond to the continued growth they had experienced. They decided to rebuild the old building, and expand the other building that sat upon the 14-acre property. Through an initiative called The Gathering, the church raised the money to rebuild the burned down building and add a Worship Center in the process.

In 2010, Hulen Street went through many changes all at once: calling a new Lead Pastor, new staff, and beginning a new direction toward making and maturing disciples. Additionally, the name was changed to Hulen Street Church. In 2011, they began a series of initiatives to expand God's Kingdom: first through partnership with new church startups all over the world, and second by expanding and renovating their building to better serve their growing community.

About the Discipleship Pastor:

Because of our emphasis on Growth Groups/Life Groups, the Discipleship Pastor at Hulen Street Church is second only to the Lead Pastor in influence.

We communicate to our Growth Group leaders that they are responsible to pastor the people in their group. As such, the Discipleship Pastor is really the pastor to the pastors.  He recruits, trains, resources, and installs all of our small group leaders. After that, he continues to coach, encourage, and troubleshoot with them.

PURPOSE:  To fulfill the overall purpose of Hulen Street Church by providing leadership in three key areas:

  • Spiritual growth: To create small group environments that encourage the spiritual growth and development of the adults of Hulen Street.

  • Leadership development: To identify, recruit, and train high capacity volunteer leaders/teachers who can multiply the impact of the Small Group Ministry.

  • Ministry alignment: To coordinate the efforts of the Adult, Student, and Children’s Ministries in a way that discourages ministry “silos” and encourages the unity and continuity of the entire discipleship program of Hulen Street Church.

The Discipleship Pastor Will:

  • Spiritual Growth:

    • Implement an existing curriculum or develop a new curriculum that is theologically sound, age appropriate, volunteer friendly, and transferable to the home.

    • Develop a Life Group Ministry from the Growth Groups that will encourage and facilitate the development of accountable relationships.

    • Work with the Outreach Coordinator to create missions/serving opportunities for the Growth Groups.

  • Leadership Development:

    • Create catalytic systems that aid in recruiting volunteers by identifying and removing barriers that hinder involvement.

    • Design a program that initiates new volunteers and continues the training and education of existing volunteers on a regular basis.

    • Determine creative ways to recognize and reward volunteers in ways that communicate their value to the ministry of the church.

  • Ministry Oversight:

    • Participate in meetings between the leaders of the Adult, Student, and Children’s Discipleship Ministries.

    • Ensure that all programs and events align with the goal of the discipleship ministry of Hulen Street.

    • Develop “links” that will create synergy between each of the different ministries.

  • Practical Responsibilities:

    • Attend regular staff meetings and retreats.

    • If requested, attend elder and committee meetings as a resource and for informational purposes.
