About the Director of Communications:

Mariners Church is a biblically-centered church focused on inspiring people to follow Jesus and fearlessly change the world. Mariners is listed as one of the top 20 largest churches in America by Outreach Magazine. As it continues to grow throughout Orange County and via online there is so much happening that it is easy to get deluged with information. For that reason, we are seeking a talented Director of Communications who will steward the overall communications strategy that simplifies and engages our audience.

The Director of Communications will report to the Executive Pastor. This person will lead a talented team responsible for all the digital and print marketing and communication across every ministry and communication channel. This position will be critical in expanding the reach of the church by curating innovative and creative content to broaden our reach and deepen our impact for congregants, guests, and visitors. As the brand champion, the Director of Communications will help to shape the voice of Mariners Church.

The Director of Communications Will: 

  • Ensure high-quality and highest impact communications are created for both internal and external audiences.

  • Develop and manage a communication strategy that aligns with the annual roadmap calendar for the church.

  • Develop a relationship with key leaders and act as an advocate for creative and clear communications.

  • Connect with ministries on a personal face-to-face and regular basis to understand their ministries’ needs and wants.

  • Maintain keen awareness of cultural trends affecting churches and make appropriate recommendations on communication tools, channels, and strategies.

  • Provide oversight and direction for email, web, social, and print strategy and communication.

  • Direct social media team to engage audiences across traditional and new media.

  • Manage the look and feel of the Mariners brand across multiple congregation sites while balancing requests for customization.

  • Collaborate with ministries to efficiently develop creative options for different channels.

  • Streamline communications by segmenting audiences to deliver relevant messages in order to help congregants get connected in ways specific to their life stage and faith journey.

  • Implement marketing automation strategies and create workflows utilizing multiple channels (text, email, landing pages, social media messages, and app push notifications.)

  • Develop budgets for social media, paid media, online and print.

  • Resourcing staff and volunteers with communication collateral.

  • Create content and ministry materials (devotional resources, ebooks, flyers, etc.)

What You Bring: 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Advertising, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 7-10 years of experience in church ministry or industry.

  • Actively involved in ministry.

  • Past experience creating integrated content across multiple channels - digital, social media, paid media, mobile, and print.

  • Strong creative vision with an understanding of ministry objectives.

  • Knowledgeable about marketing automation software and best practices.

  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills. This individual serves as the “eyes” for all things print and electronic, looking for clear communication, brand presence and consistency.

  • Able to engage and develop volunteers who want to serve.

  • Enjoy working in a fast paced environment with multiple priorities.
