Starting with only 66 campers, Sky Ranch had already begun to fulfill its founders’ dream of becoming a haven for kids to grow and learn, separated from the worries of everyday life. TribalComp-26-Morph&QuestWhat it's like to live in Van, in East Texas:

Van, a small town tucked away into the piney woods of East Texas and still dotted by the occasional oil derrick from days gone by, is town proud of its Mayberry-like character! Van offers a traditional, down-home quality of life that has all too often become a thing of the past. Only 26 miles from downtown Tyler and 72 miles from downtown Dallas, people often relocate to Van to raise their families in a safe, wholesome environment. Located just off I-20, the city is an easy drive to both Dallas and Tyler, Texas, giving families quick access to big city amenities even while they live in the safety, comfort, and peace that only our small town can provide.

An employer of many who live in Van for over 35 years, the Pure Oil Company merged with Union Oil Company of California in 1965. The oil field is currently under the management and ownership of Chevron. These companies have all contributed financially and worked hand in glove with the town and school to make the community a desirable place to live and raise a family. Oil production in Van has declined but it still remains an oil town. Although pump jacks are still seen behind downtown businesses, in backyards, churchyards and among the hay fields and cattle, the sea of oil derricks no longer grace the skyline.

Van has merged into the 21st century with enthusiasm and energy and works diligently to provide its citizens with an excellent quality of life. Nursing homes have become available to the elderly and a community center serves the needs of its citizens. Many churches are now in existence to provide for the religious needs of the community. Meals on Wheels are provided for the homebound and government project housing is available. The City of Van continues to place a high priority on education and the Van ISD provides outstanding educational opportunities as well as first rate facilities at its J.E. Rhodes Elementary School, Middle School, Intermediate School, Junior High School, and High School. Van ISD has earned the distinction of an “Exemplary” school as designated by the state of Texas.

Whether you’re staying for a summer or staying for life, Van’s small town charm, quiet streets, and wide open Texas skies, combined with a hospitality second to none in East Texas, will invite you in to sit and stay awhile.

Sky Ranch is located just outside of Van, Texas, just a few miles from Lindale, Tyler, and Mineola, a few of the larger East Texas towns in the area. Long stretches of pinewood trees and winding country roads characterize the countryside of East Texas where Sky Ranch is tucked away, with an occasional farmer’s market stand with the best sweet onions, Tyler roses, and fruit you can find. Most of the Sky Ranch staff lives in Lindale. Founded in 1871, Lindale is one of the fastest growing communities in East Texas experiencing unprecedented growth, with a current population of just over 6,000 residents. With great hotels, unique shopping opportunities, and tasty places to eat, Lindale is the perfect place for a getaway or a homey basecamp for those working at Sky Ranch or several of the major industries in the area.
