Meet The Journey:

We’re real church for real people — which means we want you to come as you are and be who you are…really. You’re welcome here. We are one church with multiple locations, one is located in Newark, Delaware, and the other is in Wilmington, Delaware. 

Our mission is simple: we help people find Jesus and follow him fully. Everything we do flows out of our passion to see people give their lives to Jesus and then point their lives in his direction. We believe this happens in three key environments: Gather, Connect, and Serve.

The Journey began in 2007 inside an industrial park off Route 72 in Newark. We began out of a passion for reaching people with the life-giving message of Jesus, especially those who’d never experienced church or had given up on it. We wanted something different from the traditional approach we’d all been used to with a long list of programs and responsibilities and protocols.  So we started something simpler – real church for real people.  We decided that the sole purpose of our existence would be to help people find Jesus and follow him fully – and that’s exactly what we did.

As we carried out our mission of helping people in our community find Jesus and follow him fully, we were looking ahead. We knew we’d eventually need a larger space to help sustain all the growth God blessed us with. We began our search for a new property, and we didn’t take that search lightly. The new property had to be in our price range, within two to five miles of our current space, and highly visible and accessible. (While we loved that industrial park, about 11 cars drove by our campus daily. Being hard to find was not a great strategy for reaching our community!)

In 2012, after a long and diligent search, God answered our prayers. We witnessed some truly radical generosity from our church which allowed us to purchase our first property, located at 721 E. Chestnut Hill Road, Newark. On March 16 & 17, 2013, we officially opened our doors at 721 for our first weekend gatherings.

Less than two years later, we had grown exponentially and were full in our prime gathering times. Through much prayer and planning, we shared our vision of expanding our current space (we were only in about 40% of our building), allowing us to make room for more and more people to find Jesus and follow him fully. Once again, our church responded, generously giving over $1 million above and beyond their regular giving to make this vision a reality. In December 2017, we finished our campus expansion, making space for thousands of people to join us in a single weekend.

Now, we’re more committed than ever to the original picture we had of being real church for real people. Approximately two years ago, we extended our reach even further knowing that the best is yet to come. Reaching Journey City is our vision as we move forward and rally around our mission to reach the 1.8 million people within a 30-mile radius of our Newark location. In September 2019, we launched our second location in the West Wilmington area. We have a deep heart for unchurched people and for serving our region — and we refuse to stop until everyone we know experiences a life-giving relationship with Jesus. 

Our mission is taking shape week after week, month after month, in the form of changed lives. That’s our story, our journey. But our story isn’t the one that matters most to us. Your story (your journey) is far more important in our eyes. That’s why we designed this place to be a unique, vibrant community of faith that you can fit into…a place to come as you are and be who you are, and a place to move forward toward God’s best for you.

 

About the Executive Pastor:

The Executive Pastor will be an organization-builder with a strong leadership gift and the skills to scale. They will directly oversee human resources; finance; stewardship and giving; office management and administration; current and future location planning and operations; and legal. They will also assist with overall leadership and direction of the staff with an emphasis on freeing the Lead Pastor to focus on teaching, vision development, and coaching.

The Executive Pastor Will: 

  • Provide oversight of the above-mentioned ministry areas to accomplish The Journey’s mission (helping people find Jesus and follow him fully); through our vision (gather; connect; serve); in the context of our culture (real church for real people); with emphasis on our key outreach demographic.

    • Human resources and leadership development – build a strong staff team; excel at identifying, developing, and deploying other leaders; design and continually expand a structure that ensures everyone (on staff and in J-Team leadership) can have a role to fill and a contribution to make

    • Finance – develop and manage a consistent, simple, scalable financial system that includes budget development and management and purchasing policies

    • Stewardship and giving – develop and manage the systems; shape and execute a sustainable strategy to enhance personal stewardship; manage the process by which Journeyers contribute financially to the church; and oversee the communication that accompanies each area

    • Office management and administration – develop and manage the systems; oversee and build the office management and administration staff and volunteer teams

    • Location planning and operations – develop and manage the systems; build and oversee the operations team; develop and execute expansion strategies for existing and future locations, including financial initiatives, master planning, design and architecture, contractor selection, and construction

    • Legal – update and maintain The Journey’s bylaws and legal policies and oversee all legal and insurance concerns

  • Contribute to strategic planning by helping shape The Journey’s strategy (short- and long-term) and taking ownership of deliverables (including timelines, budgets, measurable goals, and stakeholder communications); formulate strategies whereby ministry is carried out in keeping with the mission and vision

  • Develop and empower leaders (staff and volunteer) as the chief means of growing people and accomplishing ministry

  • Manage the updating and interpretation of operational metrics

  • Perform other leadership functions as gifts allow and vision or need require

General Responsibilities:

  • Participate in monthly All-Staff meetings and weekly lead team meetings

  • Lead weekly operations team meeting

  • Attend weekend gatherings, lead a J-Group at least two out of three semesters, and serve in some way outside of essential functions

  • Practice the personal habits of reading the Bible, praying for others, and giving your first

  • Champion gather, connect, and serve and seek to increase and sustain momentum and unity within the church for the sake of our region

What you Bring: 

Education & Experience

  • A relevant undergraduate degree is not required but would be a plus. 

  • Ministry experience and/or high-level leadership experience in business. 

  • Multi-site experience in ministry or business preferred.

  • Follower of Jesus with strong character

  • Grasps the vision of empowering Journeyers to serve; equips and leads overdoing or delegating

  • Healthy relationships with existing staff and leaders (in current position and/or at The Journey)

  • Prior experience (minimum five years) successfully overseeing operations, project management, human resources, and/or finance

  • Able to develop and implement strategies across ministry areas; able to successfully oversee multiple areas and people simultaneously

  • A demonstrable calling to ministry; previous ministry experience preferred

  • Track record of responsible personal stewardship (tithing, living within means, avoidance of consumer debt)

Newark is the third-largest city in Delaware and home to the University of Delaware. The award-winning downtown received the honor of becoming a Great American Main Street winner in 2011.
