In 1962, the New River Baptist Association survey revealed the potential for a new church in the Cape Fear area. In 1963, the Fellowship Chapel purchased property on Village Drive and was renamed to Village Drive Baptist Church.

By October 1965, the church was formally constituted with 296 members.
