WHO ARE WE?

Grace Church Bethlehem is an all-generations church deep-rooted in our community.  We exist to glorify God and love our neighbors powered by the good news of Jesus Christ. Throughout our history, we have been a church built on a legacy of Jesus-centered and biblically-based ministry, strong leadership, and compassionate outreach.

OUR ORIGINS

Over 140 years ago, 23 people gathered at the YMCA in Bethlehem to dream a God-sized dream about a new Presbyterian church.  The church has had many foundational moments in its growth over the years including a move to the Center Street Campus in the 1950’s, a spiritual revival under the leadership of Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie, and a campus expansion in the early 1990’s. In 2016, after a yearlong discernment process, an overwhelming majority of the active membership voted to move into a Presbyterian denomination more consistent with our church’s history and our theological commitments.

In January of 2018, we learned that our former location and its assets were tied to our former denomination. We now worship in our new interim Sunday morning location, Bethlehem Catholic High School.  BCHS been a welcome host and partner in ministry in this transitional period.   Utilizing Portable Church, the set-up has become efficient and the equipment state-of-the-art. About that same time, God opened the door for us to purchase and renovate our midweek campus, located strategically between Liberty High School and NorthEast Middle School.  Our Locust Street campus provides office space, next generation space, choir and band practice space, bible study, and meeting space including a 250 seat sanctuary for weddings and funerals.

A NEW NAME FOR A NEW SEASON

On Easter Sunday, in April 2018, with much anticipation, we announced our new name.  We see God doing a new thing at Grace Church Bethlehem that builds on the DNA of our rich history, but also positions us for an exciting future. There is a sense of joy and recommitment to our calling that is obvious to all who visit our growing congregation. On Sundays, 1000 people gather to worship and grow in our faith.  We continue to receive new members of all ages who join in our commitment to know, grow, and show God’s grace.

We believe God has called us out into our neighborhood to show the grace that we have experienced in Jesus Christ.  In our interim worship space, we have hosted special guests from Bethlehem, including Mayor Robert Donchez and Chief of Police, Mark Diluzio to continue to learn and partner in the love our city, Bethlehem. Two hundred and fifty of us recently scattered around the city on a Saturday to serve our city in schools, parks, shelters, and ministries.

Over the next year, the entire congregation will be a part of praying and dreaming for our new future.  We anticipate that, as God leads, we will move to a new, permanent location in the next five to seven years.

About the Location:

Enclosed within the boundaries of rearing large stone edifices and richly interspersed wooded masses stood a charming village, which positioned itself on a majestic, gradually rising frame, with the setting sun forming its unprecedented and sublime background…

This was none other than the village of Bethlehem, which was originally discovered and settled in 1741 by a religious group of the Moravian Church, who named it after the biblical town in Judea. Today, the once hidden gem is fondly acclaimed as “Christmas City, USA,” offering the perfect blend of a captivating past, and a colorful future to the cosmopolitan character of Pennsylvania and its regions.

The city remains a valued historical treasure, with its prominence being identified in six National Register Historic Districts, as well as a variety of historic sites and museums. Its longstanding active, growing, and thriving arts and culture scene has dubbed Bethlehem as one of the 100 Best Places to Live in the US (Money Magazine, 2008).

Following an authentic landscape of trade history, Bethlehem has sustained a very diverse base of technology and industrial parks, with two located within the city limits. The city’s steel capital once, upon a time, bustles with tech and biotech startups thanks to resources stemming from Lehigh University and health centers in the city’s vicinity today.

Representing a broad range of religious denominations, there are over 90 houses of worship to serve the spiritual needs of its residents and visitors. Abound with racial diversity, a vibrant lifestyle, and a strong demographic of college-educated professionals, the city was ranked in the Top 100 Best Place for Young Adults to Live, by The Business Journals Organization in 2013.

In addition to the public schools, at the educational epicenter of the city is Moravian Academy, which has encouraged sound innovations to meet contemporary challenges while recognizing the permanence of basic human values among K-12 students in the community since 1742. Higher education needs are primarily served through Moravian College, America’s sixth-oldest undergraduate institution, and Lehigh University, a premier residential research university, ranked in the top tier of national research universities each year.

Known for its rich colonial and industrial history, the city of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is at the brink of experiencing an economic and cultural renaissance that promises a future as bright as its past.
