PRBC & Counter 009About the Organization:

In 1922 Reverend Jake Howard, Reverend R. Thomas, and Reverend M. Boyd organized Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Somerton, Arizona, a little place called "No Man's Land".

The year 1950 marked the beginning of a new era for Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church when Reverend H.Y. Stevenson was called as pastor.  Pastor Stevenson brought new life to Pilgrim Rest, which resulted in a dramatic increase of church membership.

In 1984, Bishop Alexis Thomas was called at age 16 to be pastor of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, the youngest Bishop to be called to that position. Under his leadership, Pilgrim Rest grew from 200 members to more than 4,000 members on two campuses, and, flourished as an influential beacon of light and the gospel in their community, with many programs and events that brought countless people to the church and into a continuing faith journey.

With sustaining growth, the Lord expanded the territory of Pilgrim Rest throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area and Arizona, as well as internationally. In 2010, the Lord led Pilgrim Rest to establish its first satellite campus in Gilbert, Arizona. Pilgrim Rest also began live stream broadcasts reaching hundreds of thousands of viewers around the world through the Internet in countries including: the Bahamas, Brazil, England, Germany, and Iraq. On December 15, 2013, Pilgrim Rest made its first television broadcast debut. With over 20,000 viewers of this weekly broadcast on AZTV, Pilgrim Rest continues to grow exponentially.

Bishop Thomas passed away unexpectedly in January, but the church fervently believes that God is not finished with Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church yet. As they move forward, remembering all that God did through Bishop Thomas, and look ahead to what’s next for them, they anticipate a new Senior Pastor and further growth and important work for the kingdom of God. Although it’s a hard season to walk through, as they celebrate each anniversary of the church, they remember their vision to be “like a city that sits on a hill; a beacon of hope for all.”  In all things and all seasons, they strive to fulfill the great commandment of Jesus found in Matthew 28:18-20… “to teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost.”

Inside of SanctuaryAbout the Location:

Upon arrival in Phoenix, somewhere between a saguaro selfie and a poolside cabana are friendly communities to explore, a growing cultural and culinary scene, great music to discover and street art to stumble upon. It’s all wrapped in a stunning desert backdrop. In Phoenix, unmatched desert character meets big-city sophistication.

America’s fifth-most-populated city is home to real cowboys, red-rock buttes and the type of cactus most people see only in cartoons. It is the heart of the Sonoran Desert the gateway to the Grand Canyon, and its history is a testament to the spirit of ranchers, miners and visionaries.

Gorgeous desert scenery sets Phoenix apart from other cosmopolitan cities in the United States. In fact, Phoenix has more land designated for parks and preserves than any other major city in the nation. In addition to its natural beauty and Old West roots, Phoenix is home to an array of theater, shopping, dining, museums and more cultural attractions.

This mix of timeless desert beauty and urban sophistication is the perfect setting for family vacations, weekend adventures or romantic getaways. Enjoy resorts and spas infused with American Indian tradition, golf courses that stay green all year, mountain parks crisscrossed with trails, sports venues worthy of the Super Bowl and a spectrum of boutiques and fashionable malls few regions in America can match.

People come to Phoenix for the weather and the great business opportunities - although with an abundance of outdoor activities, golfing and great restaurants, it’s also a great place to retire. The city is continually growing and building, and it’s a great place to live for proximity to Colorado or Mexico, whether you want to be skiing or swimming in just a few hours.
