SouthPoint Church is a large and influential church in Southern Maryland that is experiencing growth both numerically and in lives changed. SouthPoint’s desire is to see God-intended change in people and their lives by connecting them to Jesus Christ, and empowering them to participate in a God-given cause, in a God-designed community.
The church was launched 10 years ago, by founding and current lead pastor, Matt Hall. Portable from the beginning, SouthPoint met at a higher education center for two years, but quickly outgrew the space and moved to their current location at Leonardtown High School in 2007. In the Fall of 2016, SouthPoint became a multi-site church by opening a campus at Patuxent High School. They two campuses are located approximately 20 minutes apart from one another which makes them close enough to share resources but far enough apart that they serve two different communities.
Currently, SouthPoint Church is a thriving church in Southern Maryland, hosting an average of 900 people each Sunday. Of course, attendance more than doubles on Christmas and Easter. They attract a younger crowd, so on an average Sunday there are 300+ kids, birth-high school. The church is staff led, but volunteer empowered with 40 volunteer team leaders. As a portable church, SouthPoint continues to meet in high schools, but purchased 50 acres of land in 2011.
In just the first half of 2017, SouthPoint has seen 58 first-time decisions for Christ, 27 baptisms, and multiple engagements in both the under-resourced and general community. They draw people from a 25+ mile radius and the church has a reputation for being a place where, “You can come as you are, but you don’t have to stay that way” and “ALL people matter deeply to God.” Spiritually, there is a wide mix of faith backgrounds. A good number of first generation Christians mixed with well-established, Christ-following families.
