VanderNews: February 2nd

Our Latest News & Resources

February is Black History Month. To celebrate, we have dedicated our resources to learning about the "History and Evolution of The Black Church." Over the next five weeks, we'll be releasing a full podcast series from Christian leaders and professors to guide us through and educate us on this important history and its part of the big "C" Church.

Here is our lineup coming this month:

  • Pre-slavery: Missionaries in Africa (1750 to 1850) with Dr. Eric Washington, Associate Professor and Director of African and African Diaspora Studies at Calvin University

  • Slavery through Emancipation with Professor Anthea Butler, Associate Professor of Religion and Africana Studies, University of Pennsylvania

  • Reconstruction and newfound freedom with Dr. Cheryl A. Kirk-Duggan, Professor of Religion at Shaw University Divinity School and Ordained Elder in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church

  • Civil Rights, Jim Crow and Gentrification with Pastor John Faison, Watson Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Nashville, Tennessee

  • Death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through current times with Pastor Kermit Moss,Interim Director, Center for Black Church Studies, Princeton Theological Seminary

Subscribe to The Vanderbloemen Leadership podcast to be alerted when we drop new episodes in The History And Evolution Of The Black Church Series, starting this week.

To kick off the month, we have a blog from Dr. David Tubbs, associate professor of politics and the founding director of the Center for the Study of Christianity and the Black Experience at The King’s College in New York City. Check out the blog here.
